The exit poll for the UK election predicts a hung parliament

There will be no landslide.

According to the poll, there will be no majority parliamentary party.

The exit poll for the UK General election has suggested that the Conservatives will win 314 seats which is 12 short of an overall majority while the Labour party are predicted to get 266 seats.

At the last General Election, the Conservatives won a 12-seat majority in parliament allowing them to govern as the majority party and ironically, their excess number of seats last time would have been enough to see them over the line this time around.

This will come as a shock to Prime Minister Theresa May whose decision to call the early election was so that she could increase her majority in order to carry on further with dealings surrounding Brexit.

The exit polls are usually extremely accurate and normally reveal which party will, in fact, go on to win the General Election. They are conducted outside polling stations and take a random sample of people who have just come out from voting.

This makes it more reliable than the majority of polls that ask voters who they plan to vote for on election day in advance.

It correctly predicted a shock Conservative win in the 2015 election despite the media and other experts suggesting it would be a hung parliament.

Official votes will start coming in from around 11pm and by 3am majority of the results should be known with 5am being the estimated time for a clear picture.

BBC, Sky News, ITV and Channel 4 are all planning live election coverage.
