Mona McSharry Wins 200m Bronze For Second European Medal

Mona McSharry has won her second medal of the week at the European Aquatics Championships, taking bronze in the 200m breaststroke in Paris on Friday evening.

The Sligo swimmer touched in 2:22.43, just enough to hold off Tes Schouten of the Netherlands, who finished in 2:22.67, days after claiming 100m breaststroke silver on Tuesday.

Evgeniia Chikunova won gold in 2:19.32, with Britain’s Angharad Evans second in 2:21.21. Ellie McCartney was also in the final, finishing eighth in 2:26.93 in what RTÉ Sport described as a stacked field.

The Sligo woman is back on the podium, as The 42 put it, and she has now medalled in both breaststroke events in Paris.

“It was a bit of a relief, for sure. I’m happy with it. As Ellen [Walshe] would say, I was fighting demons during that one. Not the time I wanted, but I’m happy. I was hanging on for dear life at the end but I was catching someone so that’s good”, McSharry told RTÉ Sport.

A big week for Mona McSharry and Irish sport

Irish attention has been split between the pool in Paris and the track in recent days, with Sharlene Mawdsley among the names in the spotlight and the rest of Ireland’s European Championships team still in action.

Two medals in one week marks the strongest of returns for McSharry, and the European Aquatics Championships have days left to run.
