The Cork walker was presented with his 50km walk gold medal today, and boy didn’t he love it.
From the time he crossed the line in Moscow, to the many, many interviews he has given since, the sheer joy radiating off of Rob Heffernan over the last 24 hours or so has been wonderful to see.
So often just outside the medals, the Togher man finally got his just rewards for years of dedication as he claimed first place in the gruelling 50km walk in the Russian capital yesterday.
And, after a day of press and relaxation, this evening Heffernan bounded onto the top step of the podium to accept his gold medal and to hear Amhrán na bhFiann blare out across the Luzhniki Stadium.
