Pic: Aerial view of the city of Swansea as seen on Sky Sports. Except that’s not Swansea.

We’re a bit late to the party with this one but felt it was still too good to ignore.

In fairness to Sky Sports, they don’t spare any expense when it comes to the production values in their sports coverage, particularly when it comes to football. The pre-match montages are sometimes a little bit over the top but they’re always well put-together and entirely professional and considering the amount of football the station covers they rarely make mistakes.

They made a pretty embarrassing one during their coverage of the much-anticipated first all-Welsh Premier League encounter between Swansea City and Cardiff City at the weekend, however, and it wasn’t lost on the many Welsh viewers watching on television, particularly those who happen to hail from Swansea.

Regular Sky viewers will know that they often feature overhead landscape shots of the towns/cities involved in the featured games in their pre-match coverage and considering the geographical importance of the game, they did it again ahead of the clash between Cardiff and Swansea on Sunday.

While the image of Cardiff was all well and good, the image of Swansea was a little off. In fact, it was a lot off. In fact, it was an image of Newport, which is located 50 miles to the east of the second largest city in Wales.

There are a number of differences between the two cities – not least that Swansea is on the coast and Newport isn’t – that should really have led Sky to suspect that something was amiss and Swansea fans can feel free to blame them for everything else that went wrong on the day after they lost 1-0 and ended up having to play a defender in goal for the final few minutes.

When it’s not your day, it’s not your day after all.
