Two Irish women have been stabbed to death close to the holiday resort of Kusadasi in Turkey.

Both women are from Co Down and are believed to be in their 50s.

The killings occurred last night in the city of Izmir, approximately 120 kilometres from the popular resort of Kusadasi, where one of the women is reported to own a holiday home.

The women, both Irish passport holders, are said to have been holidaying together.

Already local police have arrested a 17-year-old Turkish youth who is thought to be dating the daughter of one of the women. Her daughter is said to be on holiday also in Turkey but wasn’t present at the time of the stabbings.

It is also reported that the teenager has openly confessed to committing the crimes.

This is not the first time Irish nationals have encountered tragedy in Turkey.

In 2005, a 17-year-old Irish girl was killed in a bomb blast on a minibus at a popular resort.

She was one of five lives lost in the bomb attack.
