The professional skier Shane McConkey passed away back in 2009, but recently his friend Erik Roner decided to give Shane one final – and fairly extreme – send off.
There’s no way like saying you miss your buddy quite like jumping a snowmobile off a 240m (800ft) cliff only to parachute back down to safety. Well, that’s exactly what Erik Roner done recently in honour of his good pal Shane McConkey. In fairness, it’s pretty damn cool, but as you’ll see it almost went very wrong…
Here’s what it says on YouTube: “Professional skier Shane McConkey pushed the limits of possibility in big mountain terrain. As a friend and mentor to Erik Roner, his 2009 passing was a huge loss.
“Erik decided it was time to honour his friend by disposing of Shane’s snowmobile in the only way that made sense—by BASE jumping it off an 800-foot cliff!
“With former pro snowboarder Jim Rippey in tow to help with the stunt logistics, Erik hits the road to Fernie, British Columbia and a massive cliff face. Watch as Roner pulls the throttle and pushes his own limits for Shane!”
It’s a great story and the video is worth the watch, but skip to 3.30 if you just want to see the jump.
