Video: Dana’s official World Cup song for Northern Ireland in 1982 is something else

Simply called 'Yer Man' this is both awful, and seriously catchy at the same time.

Simply called ‘Yer Man’ this is both awful, and seriously catchy at the same time.

In this month’s edition of FourFourTwo they had a mini-tournament between the best/worst World Cup songs. Ireland had two entries and exiting at the semi-final stage was the rather brilliant ‘Jack’s Heroes, by The Pogues and The Dubliners in 1990…

However, it was a song we had never clapped ears on before from this island that forced us onto YouTube this afternoon. And there we found it, Dana and the Northern Irish squad’s official World Cup song for the 1982 tournament in Spain.

Featuring such inspired lyrics as ‘Viva Northern Ireland/We’re off to Spain’ the tune is damned catchy and as the team went on to have a pretty good tournament, famously beating hosts Spain to reach the second round, the song seemed to work.

Apologies if you end up humming this all day and if the image of Martin O’Neill in a lovely jumper (above) never leaves you.
