Vine: Diego Costa produced one of the all-time great misses last night

It’s okay, he eventually scored his first international goal later in the game against Luxembourg.

With nine goals in seven games, Diego Costa has taken the Premier League by storm this season. But life at international level hasn’t been so easy. In two games for Brazil he failed to find the net and for adopted country Spain he went scoreless at the World Cup. In fact, playing in last night’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Luxembourg he was earning his seventh cap for his new country without a goal.

However, early in the game he was presented with a glorious shot to break his international duck, sent clear through on goal with only the keeper to beat.

Had he been in Chelsea blue we would have already counted the goal but in Spanish red, it seems a bit trickier for Costa, as he shot very wide and not very handsome.

However Costa, and Spain, did recover eventually winning 4-0, bouncing back from the shock 2-1 defeat to Slovakia on Thursday. And the Chelsea striker did get off the mark later in the game, rifling home this close range effort.
