Galway supermarkets and off licences impose a Paddy’s Day booze ban before 3pm

Tony Cuddihy

Anyone planning a few early drinks away from the pub may have to think again.

According to reports in the Connacht Tribune, Galways supermarkets and off licences have agreed not to sell alcohol before 3pm on St. Patrick’s Day.

It’s a voluntary agreement with Gardaí in a bid to cut down on anti-social behaviour in the city and make the St. Patrick’s Day parade more family-oriented.

Gardaí insist that businesses are under no legal obligation not to sell booze in the early afternoon, but that they had agreed on a voluntary basis to hold off until the parade finishes.
