“I should have been much more responsible in how I handled myself”.
Ryan Lochte and three of his U.S. swim teammates made headlines on Sunday after they claimed that they were held up at gunpoint and robbed in a Rio de Janeiro taxi.
Lochte told police that he and other members of the US swimming team were robbed in a taxi at gun point by a bunch of men who were impersonating police officers, but this story was recently questioned by the authorities.
Brazilian police claimed that, at the time of the incident, the four US athletes were “breaking down” a bathroom door and “fighting” security staff at a gas station.
The 12-time Olympic medalist has now issued this statement where he apologises for his behavior and admits that he should have been “much more responsible in how I handled myself”.
Here’s the statement in full.
