“My childhood best friend.”
Tributes have poured in for a 25-year-old woman who was killed in a crash in Co Louth during Storm Isha, reportedly just days after her birthday.
Kate Keenan died in the early hours of Monday morning when a vehicle she was a passenger of collided with a tree at approximately 1.50am.
Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the fatal road traffic incident at Carnalogue in Co.Louth, where the woman was pronounced deceased.
Woman dies in car crash during Storm Isha just days after birthday
In a statement to JOE on Monday morning, Gardaí said: “Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fatal road traffic incident that occurred at Carnalogue in Co. Louth during the early hours of Monday morning, 22nd January 2024.
“The incident occurred at approximately 1.50am when a van collided with a tree. A passenger in the van, a woman aged in her 20s, received fatal injuries and was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
“A second passenger, a man in his 20s, was treated at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda for injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening. No other injuries were reported.”
Ms. Keenan’s death notice reads: “As a result of a tragedy on the roads. Beloved daughter of Wayne and Cathy, sister of Rachel and Ross, granddaughter of Eleanor and the late Barney Keenan and Brian and the late Angela Gregory and godmother of Brandon.
“Kate will be so missed by her heartbroken parents, sister, brother, grandparents, uncles, aunts, godchild, cousins, relatives and friends.”
Mid-Louth Cllr Pearse McGeough said the local community had been left reeling by the tragedy, telling the Irish Sun: “It is an awful tragedy. To lose a young woman in such circumstances is truly awful.
“As someone whose father was killed in a road traffic accident, my thoughts are with the young woman’s family.”
Tributes have also poured in from Ms. Keenan’s friends.
One person wrote: “My childhood best friend. I can’t believe it, Kate Keenan. I’ll forever treasure our memories and laughs over the last 23 years.
“You made me go to the pub with you on my 18th birthday and you got me stone drunk on loop the loops.
“Aw Kate, please look over all your family and give them the strength to get through this horrible time, I will love and miss you till the end of my day. Forever 25 sleep tight beautiful girl”.
Another added: “So many good memories and laughs to hold onto.
“Although through the years we drifted apart you were always a great friend to me, from going halfers on a three litre of frosty jacks to doing ur makeup every disco we went to.
“You had a laugh that would brighten up anyone’s day and a heart to big for this world may you rest in peace beautiful xx.”
