WATCH: Michael Fry gets to grips with crochet on Lyons’ Square Talk

Time to put Lyons’ brand new teabags to the test.

The lightbulb. The steam engine. The telephone.

As a society, we have borne witness to some truly incredible innovations, and the latest promises to be just as impactful.

I’m talking, of course, about the latest idea brewed up by the folks at Lyons Tea. The beloved Irish tea company have been experimenting with form and shape, and their latest creation shows that their efforts have not been in vain.

That’s right, Lyons teabags now come in a square shape. The decision to replace the old pyramid bags was made to improve both quality and material and to champion an eco-friendly approach that uses less packagaing. The boxes, meanwhile are fully recyclable, plant-based and there’s no plastic overwrap either. But don’t worry, the square teabags are still brimming with that same Lyons flavour we all know and love. New shape, same great taste.

To celebrate the new teabags, Lyons are rolling out a campaign that’s dedicated to all things square. Got a hobby that people are too quick to label as boring, kitsch or old-fashioned? Lyons want to champion it.

To get the ball rolling – and to put Lyons’ brand new square teabags to the test – we are pleased to unveil our brand new show, Square Talk with Michael Square.

As Lyons put the talk into tea, we called upon comedian Michael Fry (now Michael Square) and invited iconic crochet artist Susan Banks around for a cuppa Lyons and a chit-chat.

During Square Talk, Susan kindly gave Michael the 411 on crocheting, and also showed off some of her famous designs, including the wonderfully lovely Michael Tea Higgins. Indeed, when Susan’s presidential tea cosy first hit the market, they caused quite the stir online, and now, as Susan illustrated, they make the perfect addition to your kitchen counter. Not only will they keep your teapot nice and cosy, but they’re also a handy conversation starter when you’re hosting guests.

Once Michael got the basics of crochet under his belt, it was time to pull the wool over Susan’s eyes. Literally. With the assistance of a particularly furry hat, Susan did a blind taste test of the Lyons square teabags. To see how she got on, watch the video above, and keep your eyes peeled for more Square Talks coming in the future.
