It’s rare nowadays for topics to have a clear-cut answer. But this debate has always been black and white: where do you keep your ketchup – in the fridge or the cupboard?
There’s no sitting on the fence, no middle ground, no murky grey areas. We all know exactly where we stand on this one.
And now the undeniable voice of authority on all matters of ketchup, Heinz, has waded into the debate to inform us what the right answer is – the fridge.

In a tweet, they wrote: “FYI: Ketchup. goes. in. the. fridge!!!”
Unsurprisingly, this prompted a mixture of celebration from those who wholeheartedly agreed and anger from those who passionately disagreed.
It comes after a study found that almost half of British people choose the cupboard over the fridge.

A study of 2,000 Brits found that a whopping four in 10 (41 per cent) have been wrongly keeping their Heinz Tomato Ketchup in the cupboard, not the fridge. The research revealed that Sheffield residents are the worst offenders, with almost two-thirds (62 per cent) storing their ketchup in the cupboard.
Heinz haven’t just randomly picked a side though, there’s some science behind the fridge choice.
Heinz Tomato Ketchup has natural acidity, which makes the ketchup shelf-stable. However, once open this can be affected by storage conditions.
So, Heinz always recommends you pop it back in the fridge after use.
Olivia Lennon, at Heinz Tomato Ketchup, said: “There was only ever one correct answer, and we’re happy to share with Heinz Tomato Ketchup lovers across the UK that our ketchup has to be in the fridge.
“Although we’re aware many Heinz Tomato Ketchup fans have been storing their ketchup in the cupboard, we do recommend refrigeration after opening. This is the best way to maintain the delicious tangy taste of our Heinz Tomato Ketchup that you know and love.”
Sorry cupboard storers, but you are now categorically on the wrong side of this debate.
