The GLT has been tackling the issue through education and awareness programmes, and the results speak for themselves. Gum litter is down by 70% since GLT started their campaign in 2007, with just over one in four people (27%) saying they've never dropped chewing gum.
And to keep the gum-free times rolling, the GLT has just launched a new three-year cycle for the campaign, taking the project as far as 2025.
The latest cycle of their successful 'Bin It!' programme will shift the focus of their education and awareness work from secondary school students to primary school kids in fifth and sixth class, with a return to in-person workshops in the new term.
So, if you're all for keeping the streets of Ireland free from gum litter, what can you do to help?
Obviously, the best thing you can do is bin your gum.
Gum now only makes up 8% of all litter in Ireland, down from 26% in 2007, meaning a lot of us are doing this already. But if you're guilty of not binning your chewing gum from time to time, now's your chance to start doing your bit. Not only are you protecting our environment, you're also avoiding the €150 fine that can come with gum littering.
Aside from that, you can keep up to date with everything the Gum Litter Taskforce are doing on their Instagram and Twitter.
To celebrate the Gum Litter Taskforce continuing their campaign over the coming years, they're also giving you the chance to WIN a €150 One4All voucher.
To be in with a chance to WIN, simply enter your details in the form below.
