These places got the official seal of approval last year.

It’s about time there was a week to celebrate one of the most satisfying dinners in Ireland.

How it never existed before now is beyond us, but the first Great Carvery Week will take place in Ireland, a nation full of carvery lovers, next week.

From 26 June to 2 July, customers and establishments throughout Ireland will be provided with the opportunity to celebrate and showcase one of the nation’s favourite dishes.

As if proof of our admiration for the dish was needed, research from Unilever Food Solutions revealed that almost a quarter (24%) of Irish people enjoy a carvery meal at least once a week.

The staging of Great Carvery week will add an additional layer of appreciation to Ireland’s love of carveries, which is already celebrated in the annual Great Carvery of the Year competition, now in its eighth year.

The best carveries, at least as far as the experts are concerned, are to be found in Munster, where two establishments have the titles to prove it.

In 2016, the Elm Tree in Glounthane in Cork took home the award for Great Carvery Pub of the Year, while the Heights Hotel in Killarney won the coveted overall prize of Ireland’s Great Carvery Hotel of the Year in 2016.

You can check out all the regional winners from last year here, while details for this year’s competition, which will take place in October, can be found here.

Here, meanwhile, are a few alternative suggestions provided by our readers after the 2016 winners were revealed.

Commenting on Great Carvery Week, Mark McCarthy, Business Development Chef at Unilever Food Solutions, said: “Publicans and hoteliers around the country are familiar with KNORR’s Great Carvery of the Year competition. Now in its eighth year, we are really excited for customers to join in the celebrations this year with the inaugural Great Carvery Week. After all, its customers’ taste buds and fondness that keeps the staple of carvery going.

“Carvery isn’t just about one meat, two veg and a lather of gravy. The high calibre and innovative carveries we judge every year demonstrate this. There are so many parts to a carvery and customers are very exact and unique in their preferences. That’s why Great Carvery Week is a way to get customers involved, all the while supporting local establishments that strive to serve tasty carvery every day of the week.”
