Are you constantly irritated by the sound of a squeaking hinge every time a door is opened? Here’s how to fix it in just five minutes.

If creaks and squeaks constantly plague your hinges then check out these quick and easy tricks to banish the ghostly growls once and for all. Here’s how to do it in just five minutes.

What you’ll need:

WD40
Old rag
Petroleum jelly

Step 1: Buy some WD40

They often say that man’s best friend is a dog. However, WD40 definitely comes in at a close second. There’s pretty much nothing that this magical liquid won’t fix. Well, that’s pushing it a bit far, but for squeaks and groans this is certainly the tool for the job.

Step 2: Apply to affected area

Once you have the WD40 in your hand you can begin to spray it onto the affected area. Open and close the hinge while you spray as this will ensure that the oil gets right into the affected area.

Step 3: Watch what you’re doing

Make sure to place an old rag around the hinge that you’re spraying. This will stop any excess oil from staining your door and it will also stop any large drops from dripping onto the floor. Just remember, oil and floors generally don’t mix too well.

Step 4: Plan B (or plan P)

If the WD40 doesn’t work (which would be surprising) then you can always smear some petroleum jelly on the noisy hinge. Like in step 2, all you have to do is open and close the hinge while applying the jelly.

Step 5: If all else fails…

If smearing the petroleum jelly to the outside of the hinge doesn’t work then you can always take it apart. Remove the hinge from the door or the cupboard and gently take the hinge pins out about half way. Then smear the Petroleum jelly on to the exposed area.

If this doesn’t work… buy a new hinge.
