JOE’s Classic Song of the Day is Talking Heads – Once In A Lifetime

"And you may ask yourself..."

Paul Moore

“And you may ask yourself…”

2015 is just in its early infancy and while JOE will always bring you the best new music, we’re also refusing to ignore some absolute classics from years gone by.

Every day we’re aiming to bring you one of our favourite tunes from the worlds of rock, pop, soul, hip-hop, dance and anything else that grabs us.

It doesn’t matter if the tune was released 50 years just ago or five months ago, if it’s good then we’re sharing it and they don’t get much better than this one.

Artist, album and year: Talking Heads, Remain in Light, 1981

Why is it a classic? : The landscape of modern alternative music wouldn’t be the same without the genius of David Byrne and Talking Heads which is why this existential/mid-life crisis classic is a definite favourite. To be honest, it was impossible to narrow the selection down given Talking Heads’ incredible back-catalogue.

Did you know? : The fingerprints of acclaimed producer Brian Eno is all over this one because he gave each member of the group a different rhythm count on the song hence the melodies ‘disjointed’ quality.

The lyrical hook: “And you may ask yourself, Am I right?…Am I wrong? , And you may say to yourself yourself, My God!…What have I done?!”
