JOE’s Classic Song of the Day : N-Trance – Set You Free

Because it's Saturday night.

Paul Moore

Because it’s Saturday night.

JOE continues to look at some of our favourite all-time songs with an absolute dancefloor classic that defined the 90’s and still thrills crowds whenever it’s played in clubs around Ireland.

Artist, album and year: N-Trance, Electronic Pleasure, 1995

Why is it a classic? : Lets play a game and be honest.  How many times have you seen your friends instantly stop what they’re doing on the dancefloor, throw their arms up towards the sky and sing the opening chorus of this tune at the top of their voice once they hear the opening notes? We’ve all seen it happen.

Apart from the incredible beat that has managed to define the entire ’90s club scene, Kelly Llorenna’s vocals are just superb as she waits no time in delivering those lung bursting melodies.

The moment when the beat kicks in and syncs with her voice at 0:43 is so infectious that it could make even the most dour person in a nightclub absolutely lose their mind.

There’s a reason why  Set You Free has become one of the most remixed songs ever, it has over 25 official remixes to date. It’s because the song is a timeless anthem that every new DJ and generation will find and want to customise for themselves.

This JOE thinks that nothing can surpass the original version though and you might agree.

Did you know? : The song wasn’t an initial smash-hit upon its release, in fact it was only after its third release in ’95 that it got frequent airtime and latched with the public.

The lyrical hook: “When I hold you baby, feel your heart beat close to me, wanna stay in your arms forever, only love can set you free”.
