JOE’s Classic Song of the Day : The Cult – She Sells Sanctuary

Possibly the greatest opening to a song ever

Eric Lalor

Possibly the greatest opening to a song ever.

JOE continues it’s relentless quest to bring your the best songs of all time and this one from The Cult is right up there with the very best.

Artist, album and year: The Cult, Love, 1985.

Why is it a classic? From start to finish, this song is an absolute belter. The opening chords are the stuff of legend and some of you younger types will recognise it as being the music from a Lucozde ad.

The more observant vampire-loving few of you will remember it featuring on the opening credits of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie.

Written by Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy, this gothic rock anthem transcends genres and is just a song that will make you wish you were in a rock band. It’s got the searing guitars, the rasping drums and a vocal from Astbury which is just timeless.

It’s a brilliant work out song or for any time you just want to feel pumped. If you haven’t got it in your music collection, download it now, and turn the volume right up.

Did You Know? “She Sells Sanctuary” was the last song to be recorded with The Cult’s drummer, Nigel Preston, who was fired from the band shortly after its release as he had become too unreliable.

The lyrical hook: “Oh the heads that turn, make my back burn, and those heads that turn, make my back, make my back burn…”
