A brilliant tune that’s not quite from the pre-JOE era nor is it newly released…
2015 is just in its early infancy and while JOE will always bring you the best new music, we’re also refusing to ignore some absolute classics from years gone by.
Every day we’re aiming to bring you one of our favourite tunes from the worlds of rock, pop, soul, hip-hop, dance and anything else that grabs us.
Today we’ve decided to delve into a stone cold 90’s classic.
Artist, album and year: The Fugees, The Score, 1996
Why is it a classic? : The album is brilliantly produced and to many people, including this 8-year-old JOE, it provided a small peek into the much larger and diverse world of hip-hop, soul and funk.
Samples from The Delfonics, The Flamingos, Roberta Flack, The Moody Blues and Bob Marley all feature on The Score and this laid-back, languid and too cool for school track is the jewel in its crown. Lauryn Hill’s vocal range is absolutely stunning from 2:20 – 2:40.
Did you know? : The song actually uses a sample of ‘Boadicea’ by Enya. Yep, we were surprised also. The Donegal singer sued the band after they used her track without permission. The hip-hop trio and the Irish singer eventually settled out of court.
The lyrical hook: “A born again hooligan only to be king again.”
