Until this changes, Irish L-drivers won’t be as experienced on the road as our UK neighbours

They won't be following in the UK's footsteps.

Fully licensed Irish drivers still won’t have experienced this one essential piece of driving.

The news came earlier in the week that learner drivers in the United Kingdom would be allowed drive on the motorway for the first time.

UK Government said that learner drivers will able to have lessons on their motorways with an approved driving instructor in a dual-controlled car (a car that is also able to be controlled from the passenger side).

They thought that this was a necessary step to take as it would mean that new drivers would no longer be afraid to use the motorway as it wouldn’t be a new experience, but instead one that is included in their learning curve.

According to The Irish Times, the same will not be happening in Ireland and this is because the Road Safety Authority (RSA) believes that this would be a disadvantage to those who don’t live near a motorway.

Speaking to Tim O’Brien, a spokesperson for RSA said that putting inexperienced L-drivers in a high-speed environment while learning to drive was not a good idea.
