Here are the 7 best movies on the telly tonight

Rory Cashin

On top of a great shark movie, there’s also an amazing thriller you should check out before the sequel arrives in cinemas this weekend.

There are four – FOUR! – World Cup matches on today: Saudi Arabia V Egypt and Uruguay V Russia are both on at 3pm, and then Iran V Portugal and Spain V Morocco are both on at 7pm.

There’s also Love Island, which you’ll either know by now whether you love it or not.

Plus there is the cinema to enjoy, with the likes of Ocean’s 8, Hereditary and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom to enjoy, and you can check out all of our reviews for those right here:

However, if you’re staying indoors for your Monday evening, then we’ve got some movies on TV recommendations for you!

MONDAY 25 JUNE

The Abyss – Film 4 – 6.05pm

Ed Harris and his scientist crew attempt to get to the bottom of the ocean to retrieve some equipment from a sunken submarine, and they end up encountering an alien race. Another sci-fi classic from writer/director James Cameron.

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes – E4 – 9.00pm

The first of the rebooted trilogy, where the special effects blew everyone away, and James Franco tried to save the world with monkey sign language. Not as good as Dawn or War that followed, but still pretty good.

Deep Blue Sea – Sky One – 9.00pm

Scientists make sharks smarter because… reasons? … and then the sharks try to kill the scientists. Brainy Jaws, and one of the most entertaining movies we’ve ever seen.

The DUFF – E! Entertainment – 9.00pm

Having found out that she is the DUFF in her group – the Designated Ugly Fat Friend – a high schooler aims to destroy the social hierarchy, making sure the pretty ones no longer rule the roost. A decent, overlooked teen com.

Sicario – Film 4 – 9.00pm

Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin star in this horror movie disguised as a action-thriller, as a group of government agents attempt to dismantle a drugs cartel in Mexico. The sequel is out this Friday, so best to watch (again) before then.

Brothers – TG4 – 9.30pm

Tobey Maguire goes missing while fighting for America in Afghanistan, and his brother Jake Gylenhaal attempts to comfort his wife Natalie Portman and their kids. However, when Maguire returns home a changed man, the dynamics of everyone’s relationships is drastically altered.

Inside Man – ITV4 – 10.05pm

Clive Owen is robbing a bank. Or is he? Denzel Washington is the cop trying to figure out what is going on. Or is he? (No, he definitely is.) Jodie Foster is the powerful woman just trying to help. Or is she? (No, she definitely isn’t, she’s up to no good.) But trying to figure out what everyone is up to is half the fun.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
