First Dobbo and now Aengus, it’s the end of an era.

RTÉ news presenter Aengus Mac Grianna has announced that he is to leave the station after 30 years.

According to a report in The Sunday Independent, Mac Grianna will be one of the more high-profile names taking voluntary redundancy from RTÉ, who announced details of a voluntary exit programme in an effort to cut 300 jobs earlier this year.

“I told management over six months ago of my decision so this was decided long before any of the changes,” Mac Grianna told the paper.

“I’ve had 30 wonderful years at RTE but it is time for a change.”

As well as being remembered as an accomplished and professional presence as a reporter and subsequently, a presenter of the news, Mac Grianna will always be associated with a couple of bloopers in recent years.

The most notable one, most people won’t need reminding, was when he was caught applying makeup without knowing the cameras were rolling, a blooper so famous it appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Mac Grianna is expected to step down from his role as a news presenter in early 2018; we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

RTÉ recently revealed that Keelin Shanley and Caitriona Perry will be the new presenters of the RTÉ Six One News from January 2018.
