Anniversary, an Ireland-shot thriller we've been eagerly anticipating, has just been given a streaming release date through Netflix.
The movie follows a close-knit family that becomes caught in the turmoil of a controversial, rising movement known as 'The Change'.
The plot synopsis reads:
"The lives of Ellen and Paul (Diane Lane and Kyle Chandler) begin to fall apart when Ellen's former student Liz (Phoebe Dynevor, Bridgerton) reappears and starts dating their son (Dylan O'Brien, Caddo Lake).
"As Liz becomes a part of the Taylor family, tensions rise, and loyalties are tested.
"Liz's role in The Change brings simmering conflicts to the surface, unravelling the fabric of the family just as the nation itself stands on edge during an alarming and challenging time of uncertainty."
Anniversary was made by the on-the-rise director Jan Komasa (Corpus Christi, The Hater), who has another thriller, the Stephen Graham-headlined The Good Boy, coming soon.
Alongside the actors mentioned above, Anniversary's cast includes Irish star Dylan McCormack (Wake Up Dead Man), as well as Madeline Brewer (The Handmaid's Tale), Mckenna Grace (Five Nights at Freddy's 2) and Zoey Deutch (Juror #2).
Shot in Dublin in 2023, the movie has earned positive reviews so far, with critics praising the film's performances and its blend of family drama and "alarming" political story.
You can read a sample of some of these glowing write-ups below:
Assignment X: "Dynevor keeps Liz telegenic and enigmatic, while O’Brien deploys subtlety in illustrating Josh’s alterations. Brewer is lively, Deutch and McCormack enact fluctuating states well, and Grace is charming."
CineMovie.tv: "Anniversary resonates with the times, opting for realism over feel-good escapism. It unfolds like a Shakespearean tragedy and is worth watching for the performances."
Common Sense Media: "Like 1984 meets Parasite, this political thriller might keep you up at night, no matter your party affiliation."
Deadline: "Lane is still one of the most talented actors out there and carries this off in style. Chandler is well-matched here as well."
MovieJawn: "Anniversary, at a larger scale, acts as a warning against extreme politics but, on a personal level, shows how one person can completely dismantle a whole family."
Movie Madness Podcast: "The events that take place over the course of five years in Jan Komasa’s film would have been summarily dismissed as hogwash just a year or two ago, but now fearfully sounds a bigger alarm than anything in A House of Dynamite."
Style Weekly: "It captures the sensation of reading today’s apocalyptic headlines and guiltily wondering 'when does this get so bad that it touches me?'"
Third Coast Review: "Anniversary has moments of tension, concepts that will make you think, and performances that are gripping and chilling."
