22nd Oct 2023

One of the best horrors of the 21st century is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

the babadook

It’s a truly unforgettable movie that will make for excellent pre-Halloween viewing.

Sick, the new horror movie from Scream creator Kevin Williamson, is finally available to watch at home in Ireland now.

However, for those needing more films to watch, here are the ones airing on TV this Sunday evening.

The Babadook – BBC Three – 9pm

Our pick for tonight is this 2014 Australian psychological horror about a widowed single mother (an incredible Essie Davis) and her son (Noah Wiseman) who fall into a deep well of paranoia when an eerie children’s book titled Mister Babadook manifests in their home.

The astonishing feature debut of writer-director Jennifer Kent (The Nightingale), The Babadook felt revelatory upon release for the way it uses the horror genre to tell a deeply human and powerful story about grief and parental fears.

In fact, it could be credited with kickstarting the wave of more artier hit horrors in recent years, alongside Hereditary, Get Out, It Follows and The Witch.

The Babadook is also available to rent on several services including Apple TV, Google Play, Volta and Rakuten TV.

Independence Day: Resurgence – Film4 – 9pm

The long-awaited, pretty disappointing sequel to the classic ’90s sci-fi blockbuster.

Carrie – Sky Sci-Fi – 9pm

A shy and bullied 16-year-old (Sissy Spacek) discovers she has telekinetic powers in this Brian De Palma-directed adaptation of Stephen King’s debut novel.

Nearly 50 years after its release, it is still one of the best movies based on the author’s work.

Resident Evil – Sky Showcase – 9pm

The decent first entry in the long-running zombie movie franchise based on the popular video games.

National Lampoon’s Vacation – Comedy Central – 9pm

The beloved ’80s road trip comedy starring Chevy Chase.

SAS: Red Notice – Pick – 9pm

A British action-thriller with a cast that includes Andy Serkis and Ruby Rose.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines – E4 – 10pm

The third and maybe most underrated Terminator movie. Discuss.

Inheritance – AMC UK – 10.35pm

In this thriller with a lowly 23% Rotten Tomatoes score, a wealthy patriarch suddenly passes away, leaving his daughter (Lily Collins) with a shocking secret inheritance that threatens to destroy their family.

Kull the Conqueror – ITV4 – 11.25pm

The also critically panned ’90s fantasy drama starring Kevin Sorbo.
