Disney+ has just added 16 movies only for the grown-ups

Some properly great additions to enjoy at home this weekend.

Disney+ has just added a host of movies that are aimed exclusively at the adults at home. Nothing to do with Star Wars or Marvel or Pixar or anything like that (they’re all still there if you’re looking for them!), just some grown-up movies for grown-ups!

Starting with…

CENTURION

Michael Fassbender headlines this violent action thriller as a Roman centurion sent on a dangerous mission to invade an enemy camp to rescue a captured general.

THE CLIENT

A great legal thriller about a young boy who witnesses a suicide and has information about a person’s disappearance, so he hires a lawyer to protect him from the Mafia. Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones and Mary-Louise Parker fill out the impressive cast.

CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA

Kristen Stewart, Juliette Binoche and Chloe Grace-Moretz star in this very good drama about an actress that is forced to look back on her life and career when she is approached about a revival of the play that helped launch her career. 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

DISOBEDIENCE

Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams star in this romantic drama about two women from the Orthodox Jewish community who test their faith when they embark on a relationship with each other. 84% on Rotten Tomatoes.

ENDURING LOVE

An intense drama about infatuation, with a man (Daniel Craig) finding himself the object of attention by a total stranger (Rhys Ifans) after a terrible tragedy brings them together.

EVITA

Often seen as a bit of a misfire, but this musical biopic of politician and activist Eva Perón (here played by Madonna) was actually a box office success, and won one of the five Oscars it was nominated for.

FISH TANK

A tense drama set in an East London council estate, with a teenage girl (Katie Jarvis) who begins to develop a crush on her mother’s new boyfriend (Michael Fassbender).

A GOOD WOMAN

Helen Hunt, Scarlett Johannson and Tom Wilkinson star in this adaptation of the famous Oscar Wilde tale. It… isn’t very good.

THE GREAT BEAUTY

For his 65th birthday, an ageing partier (Tom Servillo) wants to bypass the usual clubs and parties in order to celebrate in a different way. 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I, ANNA

Gabriel Byrne and Charlotte Rampling star in this noir thriller told from the perspective of the femme fatale. Good performances in an only-okay movie.

LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS

Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway star in this complicated rom-com-dram about a pharmaceutical salesman and a young woman suffering from Parkinson’s disease that he falls in love with. Again, good performances, but overall very average.

MELANCHOLIA

An all-star cast – Kirsten Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland, Alexander Skarsgard, Charlotte Gainsburg, John Hurt, Brady Corbet, Charlotte Rampling, Stellan Skarsgard – feature in this great drama about a family reuniting for a wedding, which just happens to be when a rogue planet threatens to collide with Earth.

MISTRESS AMERICA

Greta Gerwig headlines this awkward comedy drama about a woman who successfully turns the life of her much-more-grounded stepsister-to-be (Lola Kirke) upside down.

NIXON

The story of, yep, you guessed it, Richard Nixon (an Oscar-nominated Anthony Hopkins), from director Oliver Stone. Its good, but prepare yourself, its over three hours long.

NOAH

A very interesting take on the story of Noah and his ark, with Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connolly, Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Ray Winstone and Anthony Hopkins starring in the special-effects filled blockbuster.

SHE’S THE ONE

Edward Burns writes, directs and stars in this rom-com-dram about the complicated love lives of a group of friends, with a cast including Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Aniston, Leslie Mann, Amanda Peet and John Mahoney.
