Ed Sheeran: “I’ve never woken up and needed a drink but I love drinking every day”

Sheeran discussed the social aspect of being one of the biggest musicians on the planet on the Late Late Show on Friday night.

It was the last Late Late Show of 2017 on Friday night and amongst the guests on the night was arguably the most popular act on the planet right now and a very popular man in these parts, Mr. Ed Sheeran.

Ed played a few songs on the night – including his controversial cover of ‘Fairytale of New York’ – but also found time to have a chat with host Ryan Tubridy on the couch, a chat in which Ed discussed his drinking habits and how they affected (or aided) his ability to keep producing material.

When Tubridy inferred that Ed liked to “go on the lash” and “go on the tear” but that “it’s not problematic”, Sheeran replied: “What would you class as problematic?”

When Tubridy said that he would consider Sheeran turning up in studio “locked” as problematic, Sheeran responded: “I’d say like, I’ve never woken up and needed a drink but I love drinking every day. I wouldn’t say that… but I don’t see that as problematic.

“I love good times, I like good times so, like, me, if I drink every day it’s like with people and having fun, I’m not like in my hotel – well, actually, sometimes I do stay in my hotel, but that’s like when you watch a film and have a bottle of wine.”

Tubridy then suggested that if Sheeran was wild he wouldn’t have been able to produce material like his most recent album, Divide, a suggestion that Sheeran was not necessarily in agreement with.

“I don’t know, I mean Shane McGowan wrote ‘Fairytale of New York’ and he’s like… he’s definitely wild, well, definitely was wild back in the day, you know what I mean?” Sheeran replied.
