Eight must-watch movies coming to Irish cinemas this September

Rory Cashin

Marvel’s new movie! The Sopranos prequel! And, yes, finally, Bond is back!

There is a great mix of huge blockbusters and potential Oscar-winners on the line-up in cinemas for the next month.

Horror, action, romance, September has got it all…

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (3 September)

You can check out our full review right here, but this is basically Marvel’s best introduction movie since Guardians of the Galaxy all the way back in 2014, and it also features arguably the very best action scenes in the MCU to date. Make sure to check back in on JOE and The Big Reviewski this week, as we chatted to the stars and director of the movie in the run-up to the release!

Annette (3 September)

Adam Driver and Marion Cottilard star as parents to a magical child who may hold the key to saving the future of mankind. But did we mention it wasn’t a superhero movie, that it is actually a musical? Yep, this is an odd movie, but also a one-of-a-kind experience. Leos Carax won Best Director for the movie at the Cannes Film Festival this year, so expect it to be the subject of a lot of awards talk once we get to Oscar season.

Wildfire (3 September)

The winner of Best Actress and Best Director at the IFTAs this year, this powerful Irish drama centres around two sisters (Nora-Jane Noone and the late Nika McGuigan) who are reunited after their mother passes away, only for them both to discover that they didn’t actually know their mother as well as they thought they did.

Copshop (10 September)

A manic, OTT, action-comedy-thriller sees a hitman (Gerard Butler) purposefully get himself arrested and locked up in a local jail in order to get closer to his target (Frank Grillo), with only a brilliant cop (Alexis Louder) and a surprise second hitman (Toby Huss) between them. Imagine Tarantino or Guy Ritchie decided to remake Assault On Precinct 13, and you’re pretty much there.

Malignant (10 September)

When he’s not making billion-dollar making superhero movies, director James Wan loves making scary films. The guy behind Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring has a new one on the way, and the plot is still mostly top-secret, revolving around a woman (Annabelle Wallis) who suffers horrific visions of murders, only to discover that they’re actually happening in real life.

Herself (10 September)

Another powerful Irish drama, this time tackling the difficult issue of the housing crisis in the country. Fed up with the broken system, a mother (Clare Dunne) decides to take matters into her own hands, creating her own unique solution to the problem. Winner of Best Script at this year’s IFTAs.

The Many Saints of Newark (24 September)

An all-star cast (Vera Farmiga, Ray Liotta, Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Leslie Odom Jr.) star in this prequel to the hit series, The Sopranos, focusing on the formative years of a young Tony (played by James Gandolfini’s son, Michael Gandolfini).

No Time To Die (30 September)

Arguably the most delayed movie due to the pandemic, we are finally – FINALLY! – getting to see Daniel Craig’s final outing as 007. Dragged out of retirement by his old friend Felix (Jeffrey Wright), Bond must face a new villain (Rami Malek), who may have more ties to Bond’s own past.
