We don’t even know the title yet.

Bit-by-bit we’re going to start learning things about the final chapter in JJ Abrams’ Star Wars trilogy, and actor John Boyega has given the first insight into what the ninth Star Wars movie has in store.

The ending of The Last Jedi had left fans scratching their heads about where the series would pick up — especially given that the character who really seemed like he was going to be the ultimate baddie was unexpectedly killed.

Now, speaking with Empire magazine, John Boyega (who plays Finn) has confirmed that the third instalment of the latest Star Wars trilogy will begin a year after Luke’s showdown with Kylo Ren and The First Order.

The time-skip is a major departure compared to Episode VIII, which began exactly where The Force Awakens had left off — with Rey meeting Luke Skywalker on Skellig Michael.

Still, the gap gives the franchise a lot of breathing room to make big decisions — such as what to do with the character of Princess Leia and give time to let Kylo Ren cement himself as leader of the First Order off-screen.

It’s not much to go on just yet, but this news has us very excited for what’s in store.

Star Wars: Episode IX also stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Kelly Marie Tran, Anthony Daniels, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong’o, Billie Lourd, Dominic Monaghan, Matt Smith, Richard E. Grant, Naomi Ackie, and Keri Russell,  and Joonas Suotamo and is set for release on 20 December next year.
