movies

If you’re in the mood for some decent movies this evening, look no further.

The full list of all of the great, the good and the not-so-good movies on the telly tonight, starting with…

The Personal History of David Copperfield – FilmFour – 6.40pm

A very funny adaptation of the classic Dickens novel featuring an all-star cast.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation – Sky Showcase – 7pm

A bit of a classic Christmas movie, with Chevy Chase in excellent form.

Ad Astra – FilmFour – 9pm

Brad Pitt’s very good, very pretty sci-fi action drama sees him heading into space to track down his dad (Tommy Lee Jones) who may or may not hold the key to saving the Earth.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story – Comedy Central – 9pm

Vince Vaughn versus Ben Stiller, with big red balls in the mix. Still very funny.

Killers – Virgin Media Two – 10pm

Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl star in this unlikeable action romantic comedy, kind of like a whack Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Let Us Prey – Legend Channel – 10.55pm

Liam Cunningham headlines this Irish horror movie about a hit-and-run accident that takes a turn for the spooky…

The Matchmaker – TG4 – 11.15pm

An American political aide (Janeane Garofalo) heads to Ireland to help find the ancestors of a Presidential hopeful, only to get caught up in the local matchmaking festival. Cute enough rom-com.

The Incredible Hulk – FilmFour – 11.20pm

Ed Norton’s turn as Bruce Banner is entertaining enough, with some decent action sequences filling out the second half.

Game Night – BBC One – 11.40pm

Our pick of the night is the very under-appreciated comedy from 2018. Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams, Jesse Plemons, Kyle Chandler, Sharon Horgan, Michael C. Hall and Kyle Chandler.

It involves a group of best friends enjoying a murder mystery night… only for things to get much more real than any of them were planning for. Genuinely one of the funniest movies of the last few years.

Assassins – ITV4 – 12am

An ageing assassin (Sylvester Stallone) plans for retirement, but a hot new killer (Antonio Banderas) has been tasked with taking him out. A decent enough action thriller.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Channel 4 – 12.05pm

The recent live-action adaptation. It… isn’t great, tbh.

Freaks – FilmFour – 1.30am

We’ve never heard of this sci-fi thriller, but with a score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and staring Emile Hirsch and Bruce Dern, it could be worth checking out.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
