Game of Thrones creators discuss the infamous coffee cup scene from Season 8

Good to see they’re laughing about it, because the fans CERTAINLY WERE NOT.

The final season of Game of Thrones was divisive. Really divisive.

Some people were happy to get on board with the surprising direction the show went, while far more people were furious, and feel the last season left a stain on the legacy of one of TV’s biggest ever shows.

The decisions made by showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were heavily criticised, as was a lot of the writing, and even some of the acting.

And even though all of this is subjective, there was one moment that really summed up how messy the show had become.

With three episodes to go, in an incredibly tense scene, eagle-eyed fans noticed one thing that really bugged them.

A bloody Starbucks coffee cup. In Westeros. Come on, lads.

But D&D, as the showrunners are known, have poked fun at the incident in a recent interview with Japan’s Star Channel.

“It’s tradition that you make a little mistake, because only God can do anything perfect”, Benioff explained.

He continued: “We were concentrating so much on Daenerys and Jon Snow that we just didn’t see this coffee cup right in the middle.

“So at first I couldn’t believe it, and then it was embarrassment; ‘how did we not see this coffee cup in the middle of the shot?’ And then, eventually, it was just funny. This one is just a mistake, and it’s kind of funny to us now.”
