The latest movie in the legendary Godzilla franchise – titled Godzilla Minus One – is earning incredible reviews, with its Rotten Tomatoes score breaking a new record for the series.
Hailing from Japan – the country which gave us the first Godzilla movie all the way back in 1954 – the new film currently holds a whopping 98% rating on the review-aggregation website.
This makes it the best reviewed entry in the franchise in nearly 30 years and the second best reviewed overall, with only 1995’s Godzilla vs. Destoroyah holding a higher score of 100%.
It’s worth noting too though that Godzilla vs. Destoroyah’s score on Rotten Tomatoes is based on only six reviews, compared to Godzilla Minus One’s 48 listed – which means Godzilla Minus One could make the case for ultimately being the best reviewed movie in the long-running franchise.

As for the new film, it is set in 1945 Japan at the end of World War II – with its plot synopsis reading: “Post war Japan is at its lowest point when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster, baptised in the horrific power of the atomic bomb.”
Godzilla Minus One is being raved about by critics for its blend of monster movie spectacle and and an emotional human story, as well as for taking the franchise back to its post-World War II roots.

Meanwhile, after seeing Godzilla Minus One, the director of the 2014 US Godzilla movie Gareth Edwards remarked: “There were a lot of things that I thought were very new, and I was feeling jealous the whole time I was watching it.
“This is what a Godzilla movie should be.”
