OFFICIAL: Gremlins is returning as a TV show

Paul Moore

Gremlins TV show

Gizmo is back.

1) No bright lights

2) Don’t get him wet

3) Never feed him after midnight, no matter how much he begs.

For studio executives, we’re going to include a fourth ‘Gremlin rule.’

4) Never underestimate the appeal of nostalgia.

When it comes to beloved franchises, it’s hard to top Gremlins and we’re delighted to say that Gizmo is coming back in a new animated TV show that’s going to be “adult-focused.”

It’s unlikely that Joe Dante’s weird and wonderful films would be made in today’s climate because people often forget just how dark they were.

Remember the blender scene in the first film?

Then again, it’s hard to dwell on the darkness of both films when we’re being treated to comedy gold like this.

We think that audiences – both young and old – will get a good kick out of seeing some Mogwai mayhem and WarnerMedia’s brand new streaming service has ordered 10 episodes of the animated prequel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the prequel series will be “adult-focused” and it’s going to be called Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai.

The show, according to the report, will be set in Shanghai in the 1920s and reveals the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 feature film) met the young Mogwai called Gizmo.

Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering and sometimes battling colourful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore.

On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.

Fans of the original will be happy to know that the original producers of the two Gremlins films are also attached to the new show.

Dear Warners, just make it dark. Like, really dark.

Any excuse to hear this song again is always welcome.
