This is brilliant.
In this day and age, we’re blessed with how easy it is to travel all over the world but it’s not that long ago since trips abroad were a rare and wonderful experience for Irish families.
Judging by some of her youthful recollections as a guest on the Graham Norton show on Friday night, Imelda May was lucky to experience a number of excursions outside of Ireland when she was child and she recalled one memorable episode in particular which provoked a great reaction from the guests and the audience alike.
Explaining how the May family used to camp out in a “giant big orange tent” that her father could never assemble correctly, Imelda told of one visit to Paris where said tent was perched in a place that was always likely to raise a red flag with authorities.
You probably know where this is going but Imelda tells it better than we ever could below; all we’ll say it that it involves an unscheduled early morning wake-up call, crying children, a stand-off between Imelda’s parents and the gendarmerie and a great story that will never get old.
