When Father Ted is only number four, you know it’s a decent list.

Those of you looking for an excuse not to move off the couch this evening will be glad to know that today is ‘World Television Day’ and if there’s a better way of honouring the occasion than sitting in front of the idiot box for hours on end then we’ve yet to hear it.

The day was also celebrated on Ian Dempsey’s Breakfast Show on Today FM on Tuesday, which polled its 170,000 listeners in an attempt to discover Irish people’s favourite TV characters of all time.

The poll generated a massive reaction and plenty of input from listeners, the result of which was the list of ten instantly recognisable and beloved TV characters below.

The likes of Only Fools and Horses, The Simpsons, The Sopranos, Friends, Family Guy and Breaking Bad were all represented, but are there any characters that should feel hard done by?

Judge for yourself after having a look at the list below.
