Ireland has a new all-time box-office champion.

Barbie has become the highest-ever grossing movie at the Irish box office.

Co-written and directed by Greta Gerwig, the Margot Robbie-starring comedy has garnered €8,854,036 in Ireland to date, according to IFTN.

This means that the film has surpassed two movies directed by James Cameron – Avatar (€8.75m) and Titanic (€8.39m) – to take the Irish box office crown.

A significant factor in Barbie’s success is the Barbenheimer phenomenon, which was sparked because the movie was released the same day as Christopher Nolan’s historical drama epic Oppenheimer.

The high profile nature of both blockbusters, as well as how distinct the two movies are from each other, led to many viewers going to see them in cinemas in a double bill.

According to Variety, Oppenheimer has now accumulated over €5.5 million at the Irish box office – making it the second-highest film of this year in Ireland.
