A screening of The Dark Knight Rises was the location of a mass shooting in Colorado in 2012.

It has been announced that the upcoming Joker movie will not play at the Colorado theatre where a mass-shooting took place seven years ago.

This comes after family members of those who were killed in the shooting voiced their concerns about the upcoming Joker film.

In a letter written to Warner Brothers, they asked to be kept safe by the studio, while also urging them to donate to groups that help victims of gun violence.

“We are calling on you to be a part of the growing chorus of corporate leaders who understand that they have a social responsibility to keep us all safe,” reads the letter, a copy of which was shared with The Hollywood Reporter.

Seven years have passed since James Holmes, armed with multiple guns, murdered 12 people and injured a further 70 others during a screening of The Dark Knight Rises.

“I don’t need to see a picture of [Holmes]; I just need to see a Joker promo and I see a picture of the killer,” says Sandy Phillips, whose 24-year-old daughter, Jessica Ghawi, was among those killed during the shooting.

Joker is released in Irish cinemas on Friday 4 October.
