Described as 'Alan Partridge by way of The Exorcist', the film is a perfect pre-Halloween watch.

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Wednesday, 29 October) is Late Night with the Devil, the terrific 2024 horror thriller.

The film stars an excellent David Dastmalchian (The Dark Knight, Dune, Murderbot) as Jack Delroy, the host of a '70s talk show in the US called Night Owls.

Fiercely ambitious, the presenter dreams of achieving higher ratings than his rival, Johnny Carson.

Following the death of Jack's beloved wife, Madeleine (Georgina Haig), however, viewership of Night Owls has plummeted.

"Desperate to turn his fortunes around, on October 31st, 1977, Jack plans a Halloween special like no other," the plot synopsis adds.

"He is unaware he is about to unleash evil into the living rooms of America."

Told in a documentary-style format - as if viewers are watching a real episode of Night Owls, along with behind-the-scenes footage captured on the night in question - Late Night with the Devil landed in Irish and UK cinemas in March 2024.

Upon release, the movie earned rave reviews. The horror thriller currently holds a near-perfect 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

In particular, critics raved about the charismatic and multi-layered lead turn from the often under-utilised Dastmalchian.

Also singled out for praise was the film's stylish evocation of a '70s talk show, its dark humour and its genuinely creepy story.

On top of this, established horror figures like Stephen King and Kevin Smith publicly recommended the movie, with the latter calling it "Rosemary's Baby meets Network".

Time Out perfectly described the film, meanwhile, as "Alan Partridge by way of The Exorcist".

Late Night with the Devil is on TV tonight on Film4 at 9pm. It is also streaming on Shudder and will be available to watch on Channel 4's website after it airs.
