A new series about a Mexican drug cartel could soon be your latest Netflix addiction

Sounds a little like Breaking Bad, which is no bad thing.

Conor Heneghan

Ozark

Great cast, great storyline and a great teaser trailer; we’re really looking forward to this.

When you think of Jason Bateman, your mind is instantly drawn to one of his many memorable comic roles, such as Michael Bluth in Arrested Development or alongside Colin Farrell and Jennifer Aniston in Horrible Bosses.

What you don’t think of, when you think of Jason Bateman, is a dark character steeped in the criminal underworld, but that’s all about to change.

Bateman is the star, director and executive producer of a new ten-part series called Ozark, coming to Netflix in July.

He plays Marty Byrde, who, along with his wife (Laura Linney) and teenage kids Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) and Jonah (Skylar Gaertner), is part of what appears on the surface to be an ordinary family; ordinary save for Marty’s job as the top money launderer for the second largest drug cartel in Mexico.

Grounded in dark reality, the story revolves around financial planner Marty and his family’s sudden relocation from the suburbs of Chicago to a summer resort community in the Missouri Ozarks.

Rather than the familiar skyscrapers and trading floors, Ozark explores capitalism, family dynamics, and survival through the eyes of (anything but) ordinary Americans.

Hmmm. Ordinary man in ordinary family laundering massive amounts of money as part of a massive drug cartel. Sound familiar? If it comes anywhere close to replicating the quality of Breaking Bad, then we’re in for a treat.

Ozark will premiere worldwide on Netflix in July 2017; you can check out the teaser trailer below.

Here, meanwhile, is a list of all the new releases coming to Netflix next month.
