LISTEN: Ray D’Arcy gets first Lenny Abrahamson and Emma Donoghue Room Oscar reaction live on air

Colm Boohig

The writer and director congratulated each other for the first time live on air.

The Oscar nominations were announced earlier today and it’s been a stellar day for Irish actors and filmmakers.

That has particularly been the case for Room, which has earned nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor in Brie Larson, Best Director for Lenny Abrahamson and Best Adapted Screenplay, thanks to the writing of Emma Donoghue.

The latter two appeared on The Ray D’Arcy Show on RTÉ Radio 1 this afternoon and, as well as being an illuminating chat on all things Room, it turned out to be the first time that Abrahamson and Donoghue had managed to speak to each other since the announcement.

That made for a great moment, as did Donoghue’s sheer excitement at Abrahamson getting a nod, let alone her own name getting called out.

Have a listen here because it really is a lovely reaction from the pair on a great day for Irish cinema.
