Prime Video has just added Miracle Mile, the brilliant 1988 apocalyptic thriller movie that deserves a bigger audience.
Named after the neighbourhood in Los Angeles where most of the film takes place, the story follows Harry (ER and Top Gun star Anthony Edwards), a jazz player who meets a waitress named Julie (Oscar-nominee Mare Winnigham, The Outsider) at the La Brea Tar Pits.

The pair fall instantly in love, spending a magical afternoon together.
They then make plans to meet at midnight at the diner where Julie works, at which point she will be wrapping up her shift.
A string of bad luck, however, causes Harry to arrive late at the restaurant, where he picks up a ringing payphone, thinking it's Julie who is calling.
On the other end of the line, in fact, is a frantic soldier who warns the jazz player that nuclear war will break out in less than 70 minutes.
As LA descends into panic over the unconfirmed doomsday reports, Harry embarks on a nighttime quest across the city to find Julie, so that they can seek refuge together - with the rest of the movie playing out in real-time.
Written and directed by Steve De Jarnett (Cherry 2000), Miracle Mile is thrilling and terrifying, capturing the chaos and madness of the end of the world.
Yet, it's also full of heart, thanks to the central romance between Harry and Julie (played by real-life married couple Edwards and Winningham), culminating in one of the all-time great endings and final lines.
Miracle Mile's addition to Prime Video comes not long after the release of Netflix's similar-in-plot thriller A House of Dynamite.
It should be noted that while we here at JOE were big fans of that 2025 film, its ending proved highly divisive amongst viewers.
If you were one of those audience members who enjoyed A House of Dynamite but felt underwhelmed by its closing moments, you may get more pleasure from Miracle Mile.
