A classic dark comedy is among the movies on TV tonight

Hugh Carr

It’s one of a few films to hold a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Only one more week until another Bank Holiday.

We can almost taste the freedom of another long lie-in soon.

But that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be able to take it easy now.

And there’s no better way to relax than with a great film.

Here’s JOE’s top picks for movies on TV this Sunday (24 April).

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service – RTÉ2 – 5.55pm

George Lazenby’s only outing as 007.

The Pursuit of Happyness – Great! Movies – 6.35pm

One of Will Smith’s best performances.

The Day After Tomorrow – Film4 – 6.40pm

Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal run away from ice.

The Ladykillers – Great! Movies Classic – 7.10pm

Our top pick for tonight is a classic British comedy which still holds up to this day.

Alec Guinness (pre-Star Wars) appears in this dark comedy about an old woman who unintentionally assists with the heist of the century.

It’s a slow-burn, but it’s well worth it. If you’re a comedy fan, check this out.

Coyote Ugly – ITV2 – 8pm

It may not be very good, but it gave us this absolute banger, so it might just be worth a watch.

True Grit – ITV4 – 9pm

A great modern western starring Jeff Bridges and Josh Brolin.

Austin Powers in Goldmember – Comedy Central – 9pm

“Groovy, baby”? More like “third movie, baby”! (We’ll see ourselves out.)

Mechanic: Resurrection – E4 – 9pm

It’s Jason Statham. What more do you need to know?

Kingsman: The Golden Circle – Film4 – 9pm

The second one.

Lethal Weapon 2 – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

It’s hard to decide whether this or the first one is better.

Nude Nuns With Big Guns – Horror Channel – 10.50pm

A revenge flick about a nun who can’t seem to get out of the habit… of killing.

Passengers – Channel 4 – 11pm

A sci-fi drama about the dangers of waking up before someone else.

Airplane – ITV4 – 11.15pm

Still one of the greatest comedies ever made.

Absolute Power – Turner Classic Movies – 11.25pm

Clint Eastwood directs himself in this political thriller involving murder in the Oval Office.

Assassination Nation – Film4 – 11.50pm

The Salem Witch Trials, but with Snapchat.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
