A great romantic horror is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

Its directors worked on the upcoming Marvel series Moon Knight.

Inspired to watch some good movies following this year’s Oscar nominations being announced?

Well, there are a couple of gems airing on television this Wednesday (9 February).

Here are your options.

Spring – Horror Channel – 9pm

Our pick for tonight, this sadly underseen indie centres on a young American man (Lou Taylor Pucci) who travels to Italy and falls in love with a woman (Nadia Hilker) he meets there.

However, unbeknownst to him, she harbours a dark secret.

An oddly compelling mix of Lovecraftian horror and a Before Sunrise-esque love story, Spring garnered an impressive 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes upon its release in 2014.

On the strength of Spring and their other movies like The Endless and Synchronic, its directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead were tapped to helm some episodes of Marvel’s upcoming Moon Knight TV show.

Passenger 57 – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

The movie that made Wesley Snipes an action star.

Olympus Has Fallen – Film4 – 9pm

Gerard Butler must save the US President when terrorists invade the White House in this decent action flick that launched a trilogy.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner – True Movies – 9pm

Hollywood legend Sidney Poitier, who passed away recently, stars in this groundbreaking ’60s romantic comedy-drama.

Minority Report – Sky Showcase – 10pm

Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise teamed up for this excellent adaptation of legendary sci-fi writer Philip K. Dick’s short story of the same name.

Magic Mike – Comedy Central Extra – 10pm

Channing Tatum stars in this fun comedy-drama that is loosely based on the actor’s experiences as an 18-year-old stripper in Florida.

Unforgiven – Turner Classic Movies – 10.45pm

Having become famous in Westerns, Clint Eastwood returned to the genre, directing and starring in this incredible epic which took home the Best Picture award at the Oscars.

Shampoo – True Movies – 11.10pm

This ’70s comedy-drama co-written by and starring Warren Beatty follows a Los Angeles hairdresser on Election Day 1968, as he juggles his relationships with several women.

The Lovely Bones – Film4 – 11.20pm

Our own Saoirse Ronan stars as a murdered young girl who watches over her family in this ambitious if flawed adaptation of Alice Sebold’s novel from filmmaker Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings trilogy).

Sorry We Missed You – BBC Two – 11.30pm

The latest film from director Ken Loach (The Wind that Shakes Barley), this acclaimed social realist drama is about a father who hopes that self-employment through the gig economy can solve his and his family’s financial woes.
