The movie was based on a novel said to have been intended as a spoof of the 007 books.

Prime Video has just added 31 huge movies to its library but if you need more films to watch, here are the ones airing on TV tonight – starting with:

The Eiger Sanction – BBC Four – 9pm

Our pick for tonight is this 1975 action movie directed by and starring Clint Eastwood as Hemlock, a retired government assassin blackmailed into returning to his deadly profession to avenge the murder of an old friend.

As part of the plan to do this, Hemlock must join an international climbing team in Switzerland planning an ascent of the Eiger Mountain.

Based on a novel said to have been intended as a spoof of James Bond books, Eastwood chose to adapt the story in a less comedic fashion.  As such, The Eiger Sanction’s spy intrigue, exotic locations and stellar action sequences (Eastwood did all his own stunts) should appeal to fans of 007.

Bone Tomahawk – AMC – 9pm

Kurt Russell, Matthew Fox, Patrick Wilson and Richard Jenkins play men of the old West who embark on a quest to rescue a group of their townsfolk who were abducted by cannibals in what is one of the best if most violent movies of recent years.

The Italian Job – Film4 – 9pm

A fun American remake of the classic 1969 British heist film.

US Marshals – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Tommy Lee Jones reprises the character he won an Oscar for playing in The Fugitive for this much less gripping spin-off. Wesley Snipes and Robert Downey Jr are in support.

The Gunman – Legend – 9pm

Sean Penn leads a great cast – including Idris Elba, Javier Bardem and Mark Rylance – in this action thriller that is sadly not very good.

A Quiet Place – RTÉ2 – 9.30pm

In this incredibly tense horror thriller, Emily Blunt and John Krasinski play parents who try to survive and protect their family in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by blind alien creatures with an acute sense of hearing.

The Eiger Sanction

Evil Dead – Sky Sci-Fi – 10pm

Fresh from the runaway box-office success of Evil Dead Rise earlier this year, what better time to check out this solid 2013 reboot of the franchise?

Escape Plan – Sky Max – 10.15pm

Action heavyweights Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone play characters who must team up to break out of the world’s most secret and secure prison.

The Loft – Horror Xtra – 10.50pm

Karl Urban leads the cast of this US remake of a Belgian erotic thriller.

Hell or High Water – BBC Four – 11.05pm

Two cash-strapped brothers (Ben Foster and Chris Pine) commit a series of bank robberies as two Texas rangers (Gil Birmingham and Jeff Bridges) pursue them in what is one of the best crime dramas of recent years. In fact, JOE happened to recommend it just last month.

Second Spring – Film4 – 11.10pm

A woman (Cathy Naden) attempts to start a new life with a devastating illness in this 2018 British drama with an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score.

The Ghost Writer – AMC – 11.35pm

Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan are among the cast of this political thriller based on a Robert Harris novel.
