A tremendous dark Irish drama is among the movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

Our main pick has a score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

ICYMI, Netflix has just added 41 movies to its library, while Prime Video brought on 31 new additions to its movie catalogue, too.

But if none of those are of interest, here are the movies on TV tonight, starting with…

Footloose – Film4 – 6.45pm

The 2011 remake of the 1984 cult classic, it isn’t nearly as bad as you might have heard/expected. Although nobody can properly fill the charisma void left behind by Kevin Bacon.

The Girl in the Spider’s Web – Film4 – 9pm

Claire Foy replaces Rooney Mara in this sorta-sequel to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. It isn’t nearly as good as that movie, and despite an interesting central plot, fails to generate any kind of real excitement.

Long Shot – TG4 – 9.30pm

Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen headline this very charming romantic comedy set against the backdrop of a Presidential candidacy.

Platoon – ITV4 – 10pm

Oliver Stone’s incendiary Vietnam War drama features some incredible performances from Charlie Sheen, Willem Dafoe and Tom Berenger.

Police Academy – TCM – 10.55pm

A much-loved classic comedy that delivered WAY too many sequels.

Calm With Horses – Film4 – 11.15pm

Our pick of the night is a dark, intense Irish crime drama starring Barry Keoghan, Niamh Algar and Cosmo Jarvis.

An ex-boxer and intimidating enforcer (Jarvis) works exclusively for a rural Irish criminal family (fronted mostly by Keoghan), while he also tries to provide for his ex (Algar) and their autistic son.

Tremendous performances and a unique look at a side of Ireland rarely shown on the big screen, if you missed it during its cinema run back 2019, now is absolutely the time to check it out.

The Sisters Brothers – BBC Two – 11.15pm

John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix are Eli and Charlie Sisters, two assassins in 1850s America, sent out to hunt down a gold prospector. A very entertaining western drama.

Call Me By Your Name – Film4 – 1.20am

If you’re up late, this modern classic is a coming-of-age romantic drama, with a teenager (Timothee Chalamet) beginning to develop strong feelings for an older student (Armie Hammer).
