Rory Cashin

LOADS of new arrivals to enjoy.

A lot of movies to get through here, so let us get straight to them, starting with…

13 GOING ON 30

Jennifer Garner stars in this very cute rom-com about a teenager who wakes up in the body of a 30-year-old woman.

47 RONIN

One of the biggest box office flops of recent years, Keanu Reeves headlines this fantasy action epic set in 18th century Japan.

AEON FLUX

A stylish but very dull sci-fi actioner with Charlize Theron playing a skilled warrior in the year 2415.

THE ASSOCIATE

Whoopi Goldberg stars in this comedy about a woman trying to make it big in the male-dominated world of investment banking.

BALTO

An odd voice cast – Kevin Bacon, Bridget Fonda, Phil Collins and Bob Hoskins – feature in this beloved animated movie about a dog who helps save the children of a small town in Alaska from a diphtheria outbreak.

BEETHOVEN

Another loved family-friendly movie about a dog, except this one is big and messy and his new owners are having a tough time getting him under control.

BIG STAN

Rob Schneider stars in, produces and directs this comedy about a man getting ready to go to prison. 11% on Rotten Tomatoes.

THE BLUES BROTHERS

The classic action comedy musical with Dan Akyroyd and John Belushi.

THE BOY NEXT DOOR

One of the best recent examples of so-bad-its-good movie-making, J-Lo stars in this erotic thriller about a single mother who becomes the object of obsession for her much younger neighbour.

THE BROTHERS GRIMM

Matt Damon and Heath Ledger feature as the titular storytelling brothers, here retold as con artists who cross paths with a real life fairy tale.

CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER

Harrison Ford’s second (and better?) outing as Jack Ryan, here discovering he has been kept in the dark by his colleagues as they conduct a covert war against Colombian drug cartels.

COP CAR

The director of this movie got the Tom Holland Spider-Man trilogy off the back of this movie. It tells the story of a two young boys who discover the abandoned police vehicle of a corrupt cop (Kevin Bacon). 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.

COP LAND

Arguably Stallone’s best movie, we recently covered this movie’s 25th anniversary. Read all about that here.

THE CORE

The Earth’s magnetic core has stopped spinning, so a group of scientists (Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, Stanley Tucci) must get down there and set off some nukes to get it going again. One of the most ridiculous disaster movies ever made. Still weirdly entertaining.

THE DEBT

Helen Mirren, Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain, Ciarán Hinds and Tom Wilkinson star in this secret agent drama set against the treatment of the Jewish community in WWII.

DISCONNECT

A psychological drama, with three interconnecting stories detailing how the modern world deals with new forms of communication, starring Jason Bateman, Hope Davis, Frank Grillo, Michael Nyqvist, Paula Patton, Andrea Riseborough and  Alexander Skarsgård.

DOOMSDAY

A very average sci-fi action movie set in the post-apocalypse of a virus outbreak, it is a bit like a medieval movie, but set in the future? But with Rhona Mitra as a sort of Mad Max?

ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ

Clint Eastwood stars in the brilliant prison escape thriller.

HALLOWEEN H20

Jamie Lee Curtis’ first proper return to the horror franchise was clearly influenced by the Scream movies, and that is no bad thing. A very fun horror.

HOT ROD

This very funny comedy, which totally flopped at cinemas, recently turned 15 years old. We wrote all about that anniversary right here.

THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER’S WAR

The prequel to the gritty Snow White reboot doesn’t have Kristen Stewart, but it does have Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain joining Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron.

JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN

The second in a trilogy of movies I still refuse to believe are actually real.

KRAMPUS

Set on Christmas Eve, a family are tormented by an ancient evil. Toni Collette and Adam Scott feature in the very entertaining horror-comedy.

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA

One of the best movies ever made.

LIFE

Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds star in this sci-fi horror about a group of astronauts who begin being picked off one-by-one by an alien lifeform on board the Interational Space Station with them.

LITTLE MAN

Marlon and Shawn Wayans star in this comedy that feels like a parody of bad comedies. 12% on Rotten Tomatoes.

MEET JOE BLACK

A very odd drama, in which death (Brad Pitt) takes on human form so he can experience love. It is also over three hours long.

MERCURY RISING

Bruce Willis stars in this very boring action thriller. Avoid.

MIDNIGHT EXPRESS

A fantastic but grim true-life drama about a young American student who is put in a Turkish prison for trying to smuggle drugs out of the country.

MIDWAY

The director of Independence Day is behind this WWII action movie, with an impressive cast, but a less-than-impressive set of action sequences.

NAPOLEON DYNAMITE

One of the quirkiest comedies ever made. Always worth a (re)watch.

NEVER BACK DOWN

A once-in-a-lifetime double whammy of incredible acting talent, Cam Gigandet and Amber Heard star in this underground fight club movie.

PUBLIC ENEMIES

Michael Mann directs this retelling of the story of notorious bank robber John Dillager, here played by Johnny Depp. The cast also includes Christian Bale, Marion Cottilard and Stephen Graham. It is good, but it should have been great.

SEVENTH SON

One of the many, MANY young adult adaptations with very impressive casts that were made in the shadow of success cast by Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. This one was co-written by the creator of Peaky Blinders. Still has 12% on Rotten Tomatoes, mind.

SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT

Burt Reynolds, Sally Field and Jackie Gleason headline this classic road trip action comedy.

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN

This is that gritty Snow White remake we mentioned earlier. It is slightly better than the prequel.

SON OF RAMBOW

A decent comedy about two young boys who attempt to remake the Sylvester Stallone movie themselves.

THE STING

Robert Redford and Paul Newman headline one of the best con-artist movies ever made.

THIS IS IT

The documentary that shows the rehearsals for Michael Jackson’s comeback concerts, which were eventually cancelled due to his death.

VANILLA SKY

Tom Cruise stars in this dark psychological thriller about a man who survives a horrendous car accident, which sends his life off in unpredictable new directions.

WITHOUT A PADDLE

A trio of the most early-00s actors ever – Seth Green, Matthew Lillard, Dax Shepard – play best friends who go on a camping trip together, but find they’re unprepared for the wildness of nature.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
