Rory Cashin

Some genuine modern classics in the mix here.

Having just released its full June schedule (check it out here), the first week of the month also brings a host of big movies to the Netflix library.

Starting with…

AIRPLANE!

One of the greatest comedies ever made. Just don’t call him Shirley.

ALAN PARTRIDE: ALPHA PAPA

Steve Coogan’s feature length movie with his character Alan Partridge. If you haven’t yet, check out our lengthy sit-down chat with the legendary comedian right here:

AMISTAD

Steven Spielberg amasses a stellar cast (Anthony Hopkins, Djimon Hounsou, Matthew McConaughey, Morgan Freeman, Stellan Skarsgard, loads more) for this true story about a 1839 landmark court case revolving around the slave trade.

AMERICAN PIE 2, AMERICAN PIE REUNION & AMERICAN WEDDING

Three of the American Pie movies, none of them really able to match the unique energy of the original.

BROS: AFTER THE SCREAMING STOPS

A documentary looking into how the popularity of their music tore brothers Luke Goss and Matt Goss apart.

CHANGELING

Clint Eastwood directs Angelina Jolie in this true-story biopic of a woman who had her son kidnapped, only to be replaced by a completely different young boy, being told by everyone around her that it is still her son.

CHILD’S PLAY 3

The highly controversial horror threequel sees the killer doll follow Andy to military school.

COACH CARTER

Samuel L. Jackson headlines this sports drama who grabs headlines when he benches his entire basketball team after they break their academic contract with him.

CONCUSSION

A highly-regarded pathologist (Will Smith) tries to raise the alarm about the lack of safety for professional American football players against concussions during their games.

THE CRAFT

The cult classic 90s witch thriller starring Robin Tunney, Neve Campbell and Skeet Ulrich.

THE CROW

Nearly 30 years later, they’re still threatening to remake Brandon Lee’s iconic action-drama about a man who comes back from the dead to avenge his murder.

THE DANISH GIRL

Tells the true story of a loving couple (Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander) and the journey their relationship takes when one of them comes out as transgender.

THE DEEP END OF THE OCEAN

Michelle Pfeiffer stars in this drama about a family who have their lives turned upside down when their young son, who was kidnapped nine years earlier, suddenly turns up on their doorstep one day.

FAR AND AWAY

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, some of the worst Irish accents ever committed to film.

FOUR BROTHERS

When their shared adoptive mother is gunned down in a robbery, four brothers (Mark Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson, Andre 3000, Garrett Hedlund) aim to get revenge themselves.

THE GHOST WRITER

Pierce Brosnan and Ewan McGregor star in this decent political thriller.

THE GUARD

Still one of the funniest Irish movies ever made.

I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY

Adam Sandler and Kevin James star in this comedy about two straight men who marry each other for the financial benefits.

IN BRUGES

Also still one of the funniest Irish movies ever made.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK

Ed Norton’s turn as the big green angry guy is still one of the worst official MCU entries ever.

JACKASS 4.5

One of the funniest movies of 2022.

JUST LIKE HEAVEN

Mark Ruffalo falls in love with the ghost of Reece Witherspoon, who used to live in his apartment. An odd rom-com.

LEGEND

The infamous Kray twins – Tom Hardy and Tom Hardy – rule London with an iron fist.

LIAM GALLAGHER: AS IT WAS

Documentary on the famous musician as he attempts to embark on his solo career.

MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA

The animated sequel sees the zoo animals adjusting to their life of freedom in Africa.

MAN OF TAI CHI

Keanu Reeves stars in and directs this movie about the world of underground fight clubs. It is very average.

MONTY PYTHON’S THE MEANING OF LIFE

The classic comedy group take on a unique look at life in all of its stages. Not a classic like The Life Of Brian, but still pretty funny.

OBLIVION

An underrated sci-fi action thriller with Tom Cruise. He would go on to reunite with this director for Top Gun Maverick.

PADDINGTON 2

We once asked Ben Whishaw – the voice of Paddington – if this sequel was the greatest movie of all time. He didn’t disagree.

PRIDE

The true story about a group of LGBTQI+ activists who align themselves with a local coal mining crew during Thatcher’s reign. A very good movie to watch this Pride season.

ROBIN HOOD

Ridley Scott directs this epic based on the classic tale, with Russell Crowe attempting to recreate that Gladiator magic. It doesn’t quite work out.

RRR

An absolutely huge Indian action blockbuster, only released in cinemas a few months ago. Check out the trailer here:

RUN FATBOY FUN

David Schwimmer (yes, Ross from Friends) directs this comedy about a man (Simon Pegg) who attempts to run a marathon in order to impress his ex.

S.W.A.T.

Colin Farrell, Samuel L. Jackson, Michelle Rodriguez and LL Cool J star in this dumb but fun action thriller.

THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING

Eddie Redmayne won this Oscar for this portrayal of genius Stephen Hawking.

TREMORS

The classic comedy horror about a small town under siege by a group of huge underground worms.

UNTRACEABLE

Diane Lane headlines this very violent thriller about a serial killer who is broadcasting their murders on the internet.

WATERWORLD

Mad Max-but-on-water is not nearly as bad as anyone made it out to be.

THE WOMAN IN BLACK

Daniel Radcliffe stars in this adaptation of the hit stage horror play. It is only okay.

YOU ARE NOT MY MOTHER

The best Irish horror movie ever made.
