One of the best new shows of the year and 7 other things to watch this weekend

Rory Cashin

All of the best new movies and shows you should watch over the next few days…

Your pals Eoghan Doherty and Rory Cashin will be going through all of the new cinema releases, new home entertainment releases, and some classic recommendations each and every week, pointing you towards what you should be watching… and what you should be avoiding.

The latest episode of The Big Reviewski can be watched in full below or you can skip to the cinema reviews (4:40), home entertainment recommendations (13:40), and classic re-watches (20:55).

Here are the new cinema releases, which will all be available on the big screens around Ireland from Friday 20 August.

REMINISCENCE

Lisa Joy, the co-creator of HBO’s Westworld, makes her big screen directorial debut with this cerebral sci-fi romantic thriller (all of the genres!). In a world that has been effectively ruined by global warming, Hugh Jackman plays a private detective who works within the memories of his clients, but becomes obsessed when one of them (Rebecca Ferguson) suddenly goes missing.

SNAKE EYES

It has been eight long years since the last G.I. Joe movie, and this time around we’re getting a sorta-prequel, delving in the backstory of fan favourite character Snake Eyes (here played by Henry Golding).

It definitely takes some inspiration from the successes of the Fast & Furious and Mission: Impossible movies, but with a score of 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, fails to reach those heights.

CENSOR

A young woman (Niamh Algar) who works in the British Censorship Board, editing out explicitly violent and sexual footage from movies, suspects that the “victim” in the latest movie she’s been assigned is actually her own long lost sister. A dark, unsettling psychological horror movie with a great central performance.

You can check out our full interview with Algar about this movie, and some other impressive highlights from her career so far, right here:

And now on to the stuff you can watch at home this week, starting with…

NINE PERFECT STRANGERS

A massively impressive all-star cast (Melissa McCarthy, Bobby Cannavale, Regina Hall, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, Michael Shannon) star as guests at a wellness retreat, run by an enigmatic leader (Nicole Kidman). What starts off as a way to fix some of their lives’ problems soon deteriorates into something much… darker.

The first three episodes will arrive on Prime Video on Friday 20 August, and the rest of the season will then stream weekly.

THE WHITE LOTUS

Another impressive all-star cast (Steve Zahn, Jennifer Coolidge, Alexandra Daddario, Murray Bartlett, Connie Britton, Jake Lacy) and another beautiful location, but the story surrounding them couldn’t be any more different. A dark comedy closer in vibe to Succession, we see how badly-behaved rich people can be when they think they can get away with it, as the guests at this lush, five-star Hawaiian resort clash with the staff tending to their every need.

All episodes of the first season of The White Lotus are available to watch right now on NOW.

SWEET GIRL

Jason Momoa seems to have taken some notes from his fellow on-screen superhero Chris Hemsworth, as this violent, adult-aimed action movie certainly has some elements in common with Hemsworth’s recent Netflix hit Extraction. Here, Momoa is the struggling widower trying to get revenge on the pharmaceutical company that may have had a hand in the death of his wife, while his young daughter (Isabela Merced) tags along for the ride.

Sweet Girl is available to watch on Netflix from Friday 20 August.

And finally, the amazingly exciting Pizza And A Movie section…

Last week, Eoghan chose Primal Fear, and Rory went with Ocean’s Eleven, and put the vote to the public, and after thousands of votes, they went with…

Nice.

Here are this week’s picks, with the vote once again going up on JOE’s Instagram channel, so keep an eye out on that to have your say!

Rory’s Pick – ROMY & MICHELLE’S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION

A total cult classic, this hidden gem comedy has Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino as best friends attending their high school reunion, but attempting to reinvent themselves along the way. Beating the off-the-wall, anything-goes comedy of Anchorman by a few years, if you’ve never seen it and are in the market for some quirky laughs, they don’t come much quirkier than this.

Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion is available to watch now on Disney+.

Eoghan’s Pick – PADDINGTON

One of the very best family-friendly movies of all time (no hyperbole here!), this is one of those movies that is pretty much universally loved by any adult and/or child that has ever seen it. A big warm hug of a movie, we can’t recommend it enough.

Paddington is available to watch now on Netflix.
