JOE has completely lost track of the timeline in the Terminator franchise. Seriously, we don’t have a feckin’ clue what’s going on after Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines but we’ll be damned if this is going to stop us from enjoying the upcoming Terminator: Genisys.

We’re quietly confident that director Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones and Thor: The Dark World) has the ability to make another cracking instalment in the happy, smiley, non-violent adventures of the T-800 and the rise of the world’s safest company, Skynet.

We will undoubtedly have a geekgasm when we see the Governator make a return to his most famous role but Arnie isn’t the only one we’re keeping our cyborg killer red eyes on.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Jason Clarke seems like a great choice as John Connor, while Daenerys of the House Targaryen/Breaker of Chains/Mother of Dragons herself Emilia Clarke will be playing the mother of mankind’s saviour Sarah Connor. Matt Smith is also starring, which should send sci-fi fans into a frenzy.

Take a look at the first images of the rather lovely Clarke below.

As for the plot, well, it sounds absolutely bonkers and is sure to divide fans of James Cameron’s original films.

The film will take place in 2029, when John Connor once again sends Kyle Reese (Die Hard 5’s Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to save Connor’s mother. Now here’s the slightly ludicrous twist.

While Linda Hamilton’s original Sarah Connor was just a normal woman who transformed into one of action’s coolest leading ladies, the latest film gives her a whole new background story.

She’s now an orphan who’s been raised by none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, producer David Ellison said: “Since she was nine years old, she has been told everything that was supposed to happen. But Sarah fundamentally rejects that destiny. She says, ‘That’s not what I want to do.’ It’s her decision that drives the story in a very different direction”.

Apparently Sarah Connor calls the cyborg protector “Pops”and Arnie is programmed to guard rather than to kill her, unlike Cameron’s original. As a result, Sarah is something of a highly-trained social hermit who’s great with a gun but not so good with the chit-chat. Sort of like a grown up Hit-Girl then.

Pops, huh?

Call us cynical but this sort of negates everything that Linda Hamilton achieved with her performance in the first two films but we’re still interested to see how this one will turn out.

Terminator: Genisys is the first of three planned films in an attempt to relaunch the beloved sci-fi franchise that’s made $1.4 billion so far.
