As for the plot, well, it sounds absolutely bonkers and is sure to divide fans of James Cameron's original films.
The film will take place in 2029, when John Connor once again sends Kyle Reese (Die Hard 5's Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to save Connor's mother. Now here's the slightly ludicrous twist.
While Linda Hamilton's original Sarah Connor was just a normal woman who transformed into one of action's coolest leading ladies, the latest film gives her a whole new background story.
She's now an orphan who's been raised by none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger's T-800.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, producer David Ellison said: “Since she was nine years old, she has been told everything that was supposed to happen. But Sarah fundamentally rejects that destiny. She says, ‘That’s not what I want to do.’ It’s her decision that drives the story in a very different direction".
Apparently Sarah Connor calls the cyborg protector “Pops”and Arnie is programmed to guard rather than to kill her, unlike Cameron's original. As a result, Sarah is something of a highly-trained social hermit who’s great with a gun but not so good with the chit-chat. Sort of like a grown up Hit-Girl then.
Pops, huh?
Call us cynical but this sort of negates everything that Linda Hamilton achieved with her performance in the first two films but we're still interested to see how this one will turn out.
Terminator: Genisys is the first of three planned films in an attempt to relaunch the beloved sci-fi franchise that's made $1.4 billion so far.
