Netflix has just added the second season of Ransom Canyon, its neo-Western romance series starring Josh Duhamel (Transformers) and Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights).
Created by April Blair (who worked on Netflix hits Wednesday and You), the show is based on a series of novels by Jodi Thomas and is set against the sweeping vistas of Texas Hill Country.
The story follows the intersecting lives of deep-rooted families in the titular town, a place where your neighbours know everyone's business.
"Season 2 picks up six months after the events of the first season, with rancher Staten Kirkland (Duhamel) fighting to reclaim his legacy after being unseated as trustee of his family's Double K Ranch, while musician Quinn O’Grady (Kelly) must decide if her heart truly belongs in the small town she once tried to outrun or in the fast-paced world of New York City," the plot synopsis outlines.
"Are they star-crossed lovers, or fated to be together? In Ransom Canyon, true love stories are messy, complicated, and always worth the wait."
Described by its creator Blair as a tribute to "a more bygone-era Western" full of "romance and drama", Ransom Canyon has earned mixed reviews from critics.
That said, it has built a loyal fan following, thanks to its breathtaking Western scenery, the chemistry between Duhamel and Kelly, and its soapy plotlines.
It's these elements that have led to the series often being compared to Yellowstone and its spin-off Dutton Ranch.
You can read a sample of some of the early positive write-ups for Ransom Canyon season two (which sees Oscar-nominee Patricia Clarkson join the cast) below:
Flickonclick: "Minka Kelly and Josh Duhamel return with the same electric chemistry, as Season 2 brings fresh romance, family tension, and small-town charm back to Ransom Canyon... Adding even more chaos ... is [Quinn's] mother Claire, played with wonderful energy by Patricia Clarkson."
TechRadar: "I don't need all of my television to be profound, life-changing or even that meaningful. Sometimes, I just want to switch my brain off and pretend I live in a picturesque, rural town on the other side of the world where everyone has unrelenting drama except for me... As a flat-out soap opera, Ransom Canyon season 2 is delicious."
Ransom Canyon season two is streaming in its entirety on Netflix now.
Check out its trailer below:

RIOTUS: "The characters are now fully fleshed out, but some fresh blood does arrive to shake things up and uncover some hidden truths. You can’t help but feel welcomed back to Ransom Canyon’s golden-hued, small-town Texas charm—especially when the story has some fun in between the drama and turns up the music to get you dancing along. If, like me, Ransom Canyon is one of your comfort shows, season 2 will feel like a heartfelt reunion."

Be warned, though. This sadly underseen film from the director of The Substance is not for the faint-hearted. Our TV movie pick for tonight is Revenge (Wednesday, 22 July), the incredible but sadly underseen 2017 action thriller. Written and directed by Coralie Fargeat in her feature debut (she was later Oscar-nominated for making 2024’s The […]
